The viral airplane video prompted speculation about what Gomas had witnessed. Months later, she said her words followed an argument with another passenger.
On July 2, 2023, Tiffany Gomas caused a disturbance aboard an American Airlines flight scheduled to travel from Dallas–Fort Worth to Orlando. A recording of her standing in the aisle, insisting that someone toward the back of the aircraft was “not real,” spread widely online. The incident happened before takeoff.
In the footage, Gomas announced that she wanted to leave the aircraft and warned other passengers against remaining on board. Her words attracted attention because they appeared to describe something frightening that other people could not see. However, the recording did not establish what had prompted her reaction.
Reports citing police documents described an argument over missing AirPods before the outburst. According to those accounts, Gomas subsequently questioned the aircraft’s safety, and the disruption led to additional security checks and a delay. The reported theft accusation was part of the dispute; it did not establish that anyone had stolen her belongings.
As the clip circulated, speculation included suggestions that she had encountered an alien or a shapeshifting passenger. Those interpretations went beyond what the footage showed. Gomas’s later explanation also differed from the supernatural accounts attached to the video.
What did she say she saw?
During a November 3, 2023 appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, Gomas was asked directly what she had seen.
“I did not see anything,” she said.
She explained that she had become involved in an altercation that escalated and described her remark about the passenger as an expression of speech. Barstool Sports’ accompanying account of the interview reported that she had exchanged an aisle seat for a middle seat but declined to discuss every detail of the disagreement.
Gomas described herself as highly distressed and embarrassed by her conduct. She said she had wanted to get off the aircraft and called the incident a deeply mortifying experience.
She repeated her explanation in a subsequent interview with Inside Edition. Asked about the statement that had made the video famous, she said: “It was a figure of speech, he’s not being real.” She clarified that she had not meant the passenger was literally an unreal person.
The precise details of the disagreement were not fully explained in her podcast appearance. On the central question, however, her answer was direct: she said she had not witnessed an unusual being. The incident became associated with paranormal theories online, but her own account described an argument and an outburst aboard a flight.
The footage shows Gomas visibly distressed, standing in the aisle and urgently insisting that she needed to leave the aircraft. Her warning to fellow passengers made the scene particularly unsettling and became the focus of the widely shared clip. Something had clearly upset her, but the recording alone cannot establish exactly what happened beforehand or why she reacted so strongly. Her later account attributed the outburst to an argument that escalated.
Strange Sounds in Another Cabin
Another unusual episode unfolded inside an American Airlines cabin on September 6, 2022, when filmmaker Emerson Collins recorded strange moaning and groaning sounds coming through the public-address system on a flight from Los Angeles to Dallas. A flight attendant apologised over the speakers as the crew worked to address the noise. Collins’s recording subsequently attracted millions of views. American Airlines later said an inspection had traced the sounds to a mechanical problem with the PA amplifier. As The Independent reported, Collins found the episode amusing and the aircraft landed safely. It was a different kind of cabin incident from Gomas’s confrontation, but another example of strange onboard footage attracting widespread attention before an explanation followed.
Unexplained Footage, Separate Evidence
Unusual reports also arise around aircraft and in the skies beyond the cabin. The Federal Aviation Administration says it documents unidentified aerial phenomena reported by pilots to air traffic control. Some puzzling recordings have later received more ordinary explanations. In one example, infrared footage captured near Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in April 2013 appeared to show an object splitting in two and entering the sea. A subsequent assessment by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office concluded that the footage showed two objects drifting with the wind, without entering the water. Such sightings concern objects outside an aircraft; Gomas’s case involved a confrontation inside the cabin. Both can produce unsettling footage, but each requires its own evidence, and one incident does not establish what happened in another.
